Area Information

Founded in 1836, when the Republic of Texas was formed, the town was named for Thomas Jefferson. Having served as Texas' first steamboat port, Jefferson remains a living page of history.

Allen Urquhart was operating a ferry at the site where Jefferson was built. When the city was laid out, Urquhart chose to lay the streets at right angles to the river rather than around a square. Co-founder Daniel Alley chose to lay his section of the town's streets along north-south and east-west lines, causing the intersecting thoroughfares to meet at odd angles.

Jefferson became a principle riverport of Texas, second only to Galveston. Its wharves were loaded with the produce of Northeast Texas awaiting shipment by side-wheelers to New Orleans and St. Louis.

In addition to the commerce of the bayou, Jefferson became a cultural center and also gained fame as a manufacturing town. During the Civil War a meat cannery was established, as were factories for boots and shoes. It is said that beer was first brewed in Texas in Jefferson. In 1867 it was the first town in Texas to use gas for artificial lighting purposes.

A rich heritage draws thousands of visitors to Jefferson annually. Built on a strong preservation movement which began in Jefferson decades ago, current residents continue to work to save and enrich the many historic buildings and sites throughout the city and county. Numerous buildings bear historical markers and many historic homes are opened for tours on a daily basis, as is the Jefferson Historical Museum, now located in what was once a federal courthouse. Other historic homes have been renovated and are in use as "bed and breakfast" inns. With nearly 60 bed and breakfasts, Jefferson, "the Bed & Breakfast Capital of East Texas," is known for its hospitality and friendly atmosphere.

Jefferson I.S.D. has a total enrollment of 1,665 students with 143 teachers. There are 3 colleges with 30 miles.

Four doctors and 32 nurses serve the health needs of Jefferson. There are 3 clinics, 2 nursing facilities with a total of 120 beds and an extended living home.

Jefferson is only minutes from beautiful Lake O' the Pines to the west, and mysterious Caddo Lake to the east. Hunting, boating, skiing, fishing and swimming are excellent.

Besides Caddo State Park, Kellyville Park, Lions Club Park and Roadside Park, there are numerous camping areas at Lake O' the Pines operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Tours of the city are offered by trolley and mule-drawn wagons, while tours of the river are conducted by boat. Additionally, there is a narrow-gauge, sight-seeing train which takes visitors along the banks of the Big Cypress River.

Many major events happen throughout the year in Jefferson. The year kicks off with one of the biggest Mardi Gras celebrations of the area in February, followed by the annual Historical Pilgrimage the first weekend in May. Fourth of July festivities are planned each year, followed by a Founders Day celebration in October and Candlelight Tour of Homes in December.
